What is coldwater agate?

Coldwater agate is a type of agate that is found in the Coldwater Creek area of northern Idaho in the United States. It is known for its distinctive banded patterns, which can range in color from white to gray to brown, and sometimes feature shades of blue or green.

Unlike many other forms of agate, which are formed in volcanic rocks, coldwater agate is believed to have been formed in sedimentary rocks. It is thought to have been created by the slow crystallization of dissolved silica that filled in cavities in the rock over long periods of time.

Coldwater agate is popular among rock collectors and lapidary enthusiasts, who use it to create jewelry, carvings, and other decorative objects. It is also sometimes used in geological research to study the processes by which agates form.
